LEV KAUPAS – AMSTERDAM
Ladies First, an all female international art collective, are exhibiting until 27th of June at Lev Kaupas in Amsterdam and go to show the diversity that can exist in female contemporary art. The funniest take on femininity in street art to me, was the piece by Ladies Fancywork Society. While they generally en-crochet anything from drainpipes, to roadsigns, for Ladies First, they completely enveloped a bike in crochet. The combination and self-irony implied by using a medium, which is as old-fashioned as knitting, for something as balls-dominated as street art, is a joke in itself. Making the streets look all woolly and soft, is another.
Textile seems to be a favored medium for ladies. Lil’ Shy, known for her big, intriguing, shadow-playing graffiti-writing-installations, used felt for her geometrical colorful pieces and Maoma, known for her heart-wrenching cute dolls, well, used whatever it is you need to make dolls look cute and fuzzy.
But there was more to the ladies than cute fuzziness. The pieces by Ephameron, Ovniand Gees Voorhees had a melancholic, quiet, uneasiness about them, which, funny enough, made them instantly less recognizable as female creations.
